Apparatus - The Baton
A standard baton is chrome-plated steel shaft with rubber ends similar in consistency to a vehicle tire. It weighs approximately ½ pound and is anywhere from 14-32 inches in length. The athlete uses a baton that is sized to the length of their arm from the shoulder to the tip of the fingers. It is weighted and balanced for aerodynamic flow.
The weights are either pounded or pressure fitted. The weights are covered with a white ball (the large end) and a small white rubber tip covering the other end. Different batons will have different balance points depending upon their specific size and weight.
Most batons are between 14 to 32 inches (35.5 to 81.5 cm) in length and are either 3/8 inch (10 mm), 5/16 inch (8 mm), or 7/16 inch (11 mm) in diameter. The normal standard baton weighs about 8 ounces (or 227 grams) – the length and diameter do also factor into the weight.
