From “Let’s Give It a Try” to Seven Years of Service: Massimo Ostini’s IBTF Journey to Continental Commission European Technical
In 2019, when the applications for the position of European Technical Director were announced, Massimo Ostini (Switzerland) was uncertain about where this opportunity might lead. The role had been unfilled for some time, and after discussions with Xavier Papin, Paola De Marchi, and leaders from his own country, he decided to take a chance.
“Yes, let’s give it a try.”
Nearly seven years later, Massimo continues to serve on the IBTF European Commission and his journey shows the "award" that comes with stepping forward and contributing to the sport.
The Work Behind the Competition
As the European Technical Director, Massimo's responsibilities extend far beyond competition week. Depending on the season, he may dedicate several hours per day to preparing competition programs, managing the set system and athlete draw, collaborating with organizers, and ensuring the execution of European competitions.
He also plays a role in maintaining and updating the rulebook and engages in ongoing committee discussions regarding projects and requests from IBTF member countries. It is a significant commitment, but it is one that Massimo finds rewarding.
Being part of the European Commission has provided Massimo with the opportunity to collaborate with individuals from across Europe and gain fresh insights into the sport's potential evolution.
Through years of meetings, competitions, and collaboration, Massimo has grown his communication skills, learned to present ideas constructively, and gained confidence by successfully managing European competitions and building relationships with leaders from other countries. He believes that his contributions to the sport have also enriched his own experience.

IBTF relies on individuals who are willing to step forward and contribute. The same dedicated volunteers and leaders are often called upon to fill multiple roles, highlighting the importance of continuously introducing new people and perspectives into the organization.
